Description | Copy of account by Hugh [of Amiens], archbishop of Rouen [1130-1164], [for Pope Adrian IV (1154-1159)]. Hugh had attended the Council of Rheims held by Pope Innocent II [in 1131]. Also there were R[aginfred], abbot elect of abbey of St Ouen [in Rouen], and W[illiam II], abbot elect of Jumièges Abbey ('Gemmet''). Relates to evidence given by Geoffrey, bishop of Chalons-sur-Marne [1131-1142], formerly abbot of St Medard's Abbey [in Soissons]. While Geoffrey was abbot, one of his monks, Gerno ('Gernonem' in acc), confessed to forging charters for the abbeys of St Ouen and of St Augustine in Canterbury. [Date of original: 1154-1159, from Adrian's dates.]
Endorsed with descriptions and 'dup'' in 13th cent hands. Described as relating to the forged charters of St Augustine's Abbey.
Letter from Giles ('E') [du Perche], bishop of Evreux [1170-1179], to Pope Alexander III [1159-1181], to accompany the above account which the Church of Canterbury will send to the pope. The late Archbishop Hugh was his paternal uncle. Giles sent a copy of the account to St Thomas Becket. Giles himself burnt the privileges proven to be forged upon the instructions of Innocent II. [Date of original: 1173x1179, from Giles's dates and Becket's canonisation.] |
