Description | On 4 Mar 1298, at the court of the priory of Winchester at Southwark, Mgr Richard de Haute, clerk, exhibited a citatory letter from Mgr Philip de Barton', canon of Lichfield, and Mgr Roger of Rothwell ('Rowelle'), archdeacon of Bedford, to Mgr Martin [de Hampton], the archbishop's commissary-general. Philip and Roger are papal judges delegate together with John Derewyne, canon of Exeter. Letter recited. Dated 28 Feb and 4 Mar 1298, at London and Rothwell [probably Northamptonshire]. It recites the mandate to the three judges from Pope Boniface VIII, dated 15 Mar 1297, at Rome. The case concerns a dispute between the cathedral priory and the archdeacon of Canterbury over sede vacante jurisdiction. Detailed account of progress of case, and instructions on how to proceed. The judges ask Martin to cite Archdeacon [Richard de Feringes] in the churches of Hackington and Teynham to appear at the cathedral priory on 19 Apr 1298. The letter was exhibited with Mgr Walter de Wynelingham and 'Dominus' John de Sevenok', clerks, as witnesses.
