Description | Testator: Theobald, archbishop of Canterbury
Leaving his goods to the poor. With Walter, bishop of Rochester, Philip, Theobald's chancellor, Mgr Ralph of Lisieux ('lexoviens') and John of Salisbury as executors. Granting 40 days indulgence to those carrying out his will and threatening excommunication to those obstructing it, including royal officials. Protecting, during the vacancy, the property of the cathedral priory, the lands and woods of the archbishopric, and the clergy of the see. No date. [Date: Millor etc, as below, p245. There are significant variations between different versions of the document.] Endorsed with descriptions in 13th cent hands. Sheppard included with the document an impression from a seal made from a classical gem which he considered comparable to Theobald's counterseal. A note of 1873 records that the original was owned by W Trimnell of Canterbury. |
