A[lbert] is penitentiary and chaplain to Otto, cardinal deacon of St Nicholas in Carcere, papal legate. By a mandate, recited, dated 15 Feb [1238], at 'Hamton', Otto has commissioned him to investigate an issue at Canterbury. Reporting on his enquiries at Canterbury. Concerns copying and falsification of a charter of Thomas Becket after the original was damaged by Simon [of Hartlip], monk, keeper of the priory's charters and privileges. Archbishop [Edmund of Abingdon] had been informed of this by Ralph [of Orpington], monk. Detailed account of events. Recites declaration by Ralph [of Westgate], subprior, that he had not known of the transcription. List of monks who declared their innocence. No date.
