Description | From: the abbot of Boxley Abbey [Kent]; the abbot of St Radegund's Abbey, Bradsole [Kent]; the abbot of Lesnes Abbey ('leiesnes') [Kent] To: Pope Gregory IX
The pope by a mandate, cited, dated 22 Dec 1235 at Viterbo, appointed them judges delegate in a case brought by the cathedral priory against Edmund of Abingdon, archbishop, concerning the advowson of Ickham ('Iecham') and other churches, and the archbishop's claims to specified offerings from named priory manors. Cites charge ('editio'). Report on the progress of the proceedings. By writs dated 14 Mar 1237 at Rochester and 10 Jul [1237] at Woodstock, cited, Henry III prohibited the case from being heard in a church court. By a further mandate dated 27 Feb 1237 at Terni ('Interamn''), cited, the pope ordered proceedings to continue. The charge was altered to seek the archbishop to observe the terms of the settlement, cited, made before the bishop of Ely, the abbot of St Edmund's and the dean of Lincoln, of the dispute between the priory and Archbishop Hubert Walter concerning marshes and fisheries. This was confirmed by Pope Innocent III. The monks are concerned about a marsh in 'Serle' marsh, lying with the 'limene' [alias Rother] river to south, the marsh of St Augustine's Abbey to north, Blackbourne Marsh to east, and 'Reding' Marsh to west. They are also concerned about half a fishery beside the bridge of 'Oxenel' in their land of 'Staple'. No date. [Date: composition, as given below, by which case resolved, dated 18 Dec 1237.]
Endorsed with late 13th cent description, describing Edmund as saint. Also 14th cent endorsement, describing the document as relating to 'scerlemer' at Appledore. |
