Description | Taken at Appledore before Edward III's escheator. Robert de Ovenham, John Rolf, John Clerk, Richard atte Rethe, Hamo de Bomylonde, Thomas Stevene, Henry Pot', John Tannere, Robert de Sedewe..., William de Petthyng, Henry Lange and John Palmere advised on oath that the king should grant a license to John [Stratford], archbishop, and the cathedral priory for filling up an old trench from the arm of the sea called Appledore to Romney. This is on their soil ('solum') and has been blocked by silt and sand for more than 30 years. The sea has formed a new trench through which ships can reach Romney. This trench is the soil of the archbishop, the priory, Margaret de Basynges, and the abbot of Robertsbridge. It is 500 perches long and 20 perches wide, while the old trench is 700 perches long and 10 perches wide. The land of the trenches is held in chief as part of the archbishop's manor of Aldington, the priory's manor of Appledore, Margaret's manor of Kenardington, and the abbey of Robertsbridge's manor of Woodruff ('Woderove', in Snargate parish).
