TitleMandates
Date1272-1294
DescriptionThese documents are mandates issued by the cathedral priory while exercising sede vacante jurisdiction of the Court of Canterbury. Some are documents which have been defined as inhibition and citation mandates. These were issued when appeals were made to the Court of Canterbury. It suspended proceedings in the lower court and fixed a date for beginning the appeal proceedings. See N Adams and C Donahue, Select cases from the ecclesiastical courts of the Province of Canterbury c1200-1301 (London, Selden Society, 1981), pp59-72.
Most of the documents are badly damaged. In many cases it is not possible to identify their precise document type.
Most of the documents are dated 1294. The dates on some others are illegible, but, because of their style and content, they can be dated to the same period. One document dates from the 1270-2 vacancy.
The diplomatic of the documents is heavily abbreviated. In many cases the date for appearance at court has been altered.
