Description | Writer: Castell, John Addressee: Neville, Thomas, dean of Canterbury Cathedral, and chapter
The Dean and Chapter are dissatisfied with Mr Pownall in his work under Castell as bedel of Hollingbourne and steward of the courts, accusing him of abusing the courts and not paying all rents. Pownall will defend himself and Castell will come to Canterbury after a long absence. Contemporary endorsements, one noting that John Cartwright has taken out a rental of properties in 'the towne', the other, dated 1 Jan 1613, that Mr Sympson has the composition between the city and the Cathedral and a book containing a plea for the liberties, with 'd[elivere]d to d Fotherby at the sunne' in later hand. [Reference is either to Charles Fotherby, dean, or Martin Fotherby, prebendary. William Somner senior, the Dean and Chapter registrar, lived in a house with the sign of the sun at this date (Somner, pvi).] Endorsement by Bunce.
