TitleWESTWELL
Date1278-1500
DescriptionWestwell manor is on the North Downs, just north of Ashford. It is more generally called Welles in the accounts before 1337. These accounts, drawn up by a serjeant, survive from 1278. They have suffered rather more than most from the ravages of time, many being now dirty, damaged, or missing sections. The serjeants' accounts follow the usual format with receipts and expenses, grain and stock accounts, with sometimes an inventory of the manor's effects and stock attached at the foot. From 1352 the bedel accounts separately for the manor's rents. By 1399, the demesne had been let to farm and the farmer accounts very briefly for his rent and any building expenses. A couple of accounts also survive for the farmer of the rectory of Westwell.
