| Description | The manor of East Farleigh lies in the Medway valley, just to the west of Maidstone. Prior to 1291 it was accounted for jointly with West Farleigh. From 1291 a serjeant accounts for receipts and expenses, and corn and stock. There is a possible break c1351-1361 when the manor may have been let to farm, before a farmer has certainly appeared by 1405. In 1349 a bedel appears, accounting for the rents of the manor, with hen and customary rents on the dorse of his account, which is usually sewn to the foot of the relevant serjeant's account. The bedel continues to account until 1475. Occasionally the East Farleigh officials account for West Farleigh as well in the one account;though even when accounted for separately, the officials of the two manors are often the same. |
