TitleVisitation Deeds and Papers
Date1574-1898
Description"Archiepiscopal Visitations 17th, 18th and 19th centuries" The majority of documents in this box (BB/P/1-144) are the inhibitions and relaxations that were sent from the Archbishop to the Dean and Chapter before and after his visitations of the cathedral. Inhibitions warned the officers of the cathedral not to interfere with the duties of the men carrying out the visitation, while relaxations lifted this inhibition. Also to be found with these documents are the citations which summoned the cathedral staff to the Chapter House to attend the Archbishop, the certificates confirming that the citation had been exhibited and the lists of names of the officers and servants of the cathedral. Some of these returns are also to be found in the diocesan archive (DCb/VR). Citations to send a proxy to attend convocation are to be found in BB P/145-150. BB P/151-182 are 'miscellaneous' papers, principally concerned with visitations and ranging in date from 1574 to 1885.
