TitleLetters and papers
Date1789-1880
DescriptionThe papers and correspondence in this box relate to the town and parish of Faversham, particularly to the Faversham Navigation, which was constructed in the early 1840s through some of the Dean and Chapter's lands. There is also some eighteenth century material concerning a tithe dispute in the parish.
The two books (BB 54/4-5) were the result of a committee being formed in Faversham to investigate the new rate assessment in 1830. The improvement of the creek in Faversham is the subject of the correspondence in BB 54/6-68. The new channel was built through some of the Dean and Chapter's lands and many of the letters relate to the reluctance of the Dean and Chapter to allow the navigation to proceed until a price for the land had been agreed and paid.
BB 54/71-72 relate to the relocation of Faversham Grammar school in the late 1870s and the last three items in this box were odd leases for Canterbury properties, two of which were not executed, the other being rodent damaged.
