| Description | The correspondence in box 37 is mainly concerned with properties in Burgate Street and the Archbishop's Palace, either with lessees or with the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, relating to requests from the Dean and Chapter to purchase property around the Cathedral. There is a series of papers relating to income tax returns from 1842-1870 and two series of deeds. The first group of deeds relates to the Quested, Kelly and Allen families who also appear in box 27. John Quested had two daughters; Elizabeth, who married William Allen, and Mary. Richard Kelly was a cousin of Elizabeth Allen. BB 37/13-25 in this group were originally in a wrapper endorsed 'No 5, Mr Kelly's Title Deeds of a Stable in North Lane Westgate Kent. Purchased 5 July 1792 of Mr Thurston Whittle and Wife'. The second group of deeds are leases, assignments and mortgages for two tenements on the west side of the road leading from the Christchurch gate to the Cathedral in Canterbury. |
