Description | Writer: Gilbert, George
These reminiscences were compiled by George Gilbert (1796-1873), son of Thomas Gilbert, vesturer of Canterbury cathedral. He became vicar of Syston and prebendary of Lincoln. A group of friends of George Gilbert suggested that he should lecture on his memories of earlier Canterbury; one of them, Edward Orger, suggested he should write a volume of memoirs. The idea was adopted and this volume is the outcome. It was presented to St Augustine's College, Canterbury. It was edited and published (1938) by Dr Shirley, headmaster of the King's School. A letter from E H Woodall (1875) giving, inter alia, an account of Gilbert's funeral is inserted at p141. |
