De la Motte was of French extraction and spent his boyhood at Weymouth. George III, during his visits to the town, heard of the young artist and placed him in the Royal Academy with the President, Benjamin West. Devoting himself to landscapes and marine views, de la Motte became noted for his beautiful drawings of trees, lithographs of which he was wont to present to his pupils. He exhibited in the Academy from 1796 to 1848 and died 13 Feb 1863, aged 88.
Nos 34 (dated 1843) and 44 are by Dr William Crotch (1775-1847), president of "The Great School" at Oxford and first principal of the Royal Academy of Music 1822-1833. He succeeded Delamotte as drawing master to the undergraduates at Oxford in Feb 1803; Delamotte was appointed 2nd drawing master at Great Marlow Military College in Sep 1803.
