The original was by Canon Greville Mairis Livett, FSA, canon of Rochester Cathedral, in Dec 1925. A hole was made in the west wall of the crypt to try and determine the nature of an apparent opening. An eleventh century refilling of a crack was found with other evidence of settlement, including soot from the 1174 fire, and a tentative suggestion was made that the opening was a builders' hole, an idea not maintained. This wall also formed the foundations of the eastern wall of the central tower of Lanfranc's church. |
