In June 1927, Page obtained leave to make an examination of the cathedral crypt and transeptal towers. He studied particularly the extra buttressing of the south eastern chapel and the alterations in the building of St Gabriel's chapel. He came to the conclusion that the reinforcement carried out on the south side was necessitated by a combination of bad building and the outward thrust of the roof of the south choir aisle which was then unbuttressed. The apsidal arches in St Anselm's and St Gabriel's chapels therefore had to be strengthened during construction before they were completed and before the frescoes were finished. The building of the north side is more regular and solid and although similar precautions were taken, their presence is not so evident or obtrusive. When the wall in St Anselm's chapel was removed in 1888, the fresco of St Paul at Melitus was revealed. |
